Race, Directed by Manahar Kumar (Georgia/India) - An African American 10-year old girl and a Caucasian American 8-year old boy get in a race leading to bloody consequences. As an International student in the US since Fall, 2017 I have always had one foot in the present, the other way in the future. Race allowed me to combine my Indian roots and understand the culture I’m presently in, further questioning the future. With racism in the US and casteism back in India, these ideologies are age old siblings that every storyteller has tried to tackle. I wanted my approach to be playful, set in the world of two kids, albeit raw and surreal, somewhat like the current climate. At the end of the day, does it really matter who wins, if we can’t approach life with compassion and mindfulness? Gandhi said, “An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind.” Let’s wake up.
